Even if it was grosser, and an even worse adaption, this movie made me laugh, smile, and related to real issues with siblings, and thats the reason it was really good tome. I laughed at the comedy, and it felt just as strong as the original, but some of the Fregley jokes were just gross and not funny. This adaption stays even further away from the book, and I didn't like that, although there were some moments I was happy they put in, gave it more of a better ending. Greg and Rodricks relationship deals with sibling rivalries, which we all know, but it also deals with in the end we may hate our siblings, but deep down we like em, or even love them, I should know I have 2 siblings. The cast is better than before in my opinion, a lot funnier, great comedians, and proves this could be a good series. This is Gregs 7th Grade year, and he has to survive his brother Rodricks torment, but there is a lot in Gregs year, like his friend Rowleys magic act, his new crush Holly Hills, and Gregs mom over bearing and embarassing ways. Totally underrated, a great comedy family movie just about as good as the original. It probably does, in certain sections, but overall, maintains a good balance between the more classier comedy and the slapstick and gags of the first, creating a fun, and definitely all round piece of family film. But it still keeps a certain more linear style of sophistication with its choice of storytelling and narrative this time round.īut that sophistication does bear the risk of alienating its original half term style audience.
The story is interesting enough, with many different parts and sketches throughout. Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris, as the parents again, make short but as usual great addition to the film. The cast however do not let down, with excellent performances from Zachary Gordon and especially Devon Bostick, who really shines throughout the ninety minutes. However, for younger children, the main focus of the audience, it dawdles and loses much of the slapstick and gag centred comedy of the first. However, the reboot was met with disdain from both critics and audiences and performed poorly at the box office, and Fox once more abandoned the Diary of a Wimpy Kid property.It lacks some of the wittiness and style of the first feature, but 'Rodrick Rules' is a more adult affair, more sophisticated, more substance, and just as entertaining.įocusing this time on the relationship between main kid Greg Heffley, played wonderfully like the first, by Zachary Gordon, and his older brother Rodrick, played exceptionally by Devon Bostick, the two brothers begin to bond despite their differences.Īnd straight out of the starting gate the film takes the path of a more adult, and a certainly more impressive motion picture.
